October 30, 2017 -"Improve the strength of the Cabang Surabaya Dua ( Branch)"

We started to make additional visits to strong members. With the intent to add members to our action to improve Team. The goal is to help one another to get both Family History ( adding a person to the name & dates & get them Temple ready ) and Proselyting ( centered in & around Kitab Mormon ['The Book of Mormon getting Investigators to commit to baptism ] to work in "Tandem" (concert).

Additionally, we visited 2 families who are hampered from attending Church regularly. Mostly due to distance & other difficulties as transportation and economic reasons. One of the families has a special needs child that for a variety of reasons cannot always attend. We reported that visit to the Branch President with a request to consider allowing us to visit them each month so they still feel part of the Branch. Their 14-year-old boy, Arya, is the one that prods his parents to stay active. His father works all week till late Saturday to provide for his family. They decided to move way out of town. The rent for their very modest home is much cheaper & affordable now. We held an extra Saturday 28 Oct. Fam History "workshop" session. The YM President & a YM member were instructed in Family History & Family Indexing. They both proved to be very skilled on computers. We invited the young man who does not have a computer at home, to call us so we can make a special trip to Church to accommodate him finishing his 4 generations & allow him to continue Family Indexing he really enjoys. Another two members added to our "Team C2".

The 29 October Family History 4 Generations Asia Initiative Presentation was a great success. Branch  President Didit Dwinanto allowed us the full two hours after Sacrament. Awesome ! The Presentation was done on the same date all over Asia. Including Cambodia, India, Japan & Singapore. We did not have the numbers in attendance that we had hoped for, but the ones attending were a super group of all ear members. We asked a very enthusiastic, strong member & only HP in the Branch, to give the presentation. Br. Nestor Sunglao hails from the Philippines.  He succeeded brilliantly. He put together a fabulous Program in word and well put together video clips. The Theme: "Preach the Gospel, Perfect the Saints and Redeem the Dead."  He captivated the eager audience from start to finish with his unique and strong way of teaching. Mom was asked to give her "spin" on Family History. She informed the audience that once you start adding a person to the name & dates, you start to establish a close relationship with that ancestor & often feel their presence in unique ways. We have a very strong core of members and we keep adding, one at a time, participants to the Cabang Surabaya Dua "Team". I wrapped up the meeting, with among others, showing the audience the poster depicting a living person who is beseeched by ancestors to perform the work they cannot do themselves anymore. During the past couple of weeks, we sensed an improved attitude towards the work to be done & some real results already. We hope to carry on & increase the momentum from here on.

From now on we can make sure to strike a sensitive balance between what needs to be done and the completely different use of opportunity attached to time that is prevalent here. To get things done is, most of the time, done here in a very relaxed fashion as to timing. The carefully building a stronger sharing the Gospel with others, needs to be done on a careful step by step process.

October 22, 2017

The fine tuning of the Family History 4 Generations Asia Initiative Presentation that's going to hit the stage in the Chapel of Cabang Surabaya 2 took up most of the week. Some confusing phone calls that should have been coming in weeks ago distracted us somewhat. However, they felt like putting a dent in a concrete wall with your bare hand. Must have felt that way by the callers.
*************************
As an unexpected "bonus" Branch President Didit Dwinanto, allowed us an extra hour past the Combined Sunday School & include the Priesthood & Relief Society hour, realizing the incredible importance of this Presentation. Very well received by us & definitely beneficial to the audience...
Another, very popular "Free" car wash was organized by the full-time young Elders. They covered the word Car. So only " sepada motor" (motorbikes ) were invited. Those invitations are done by 2 Elders holding up the banner some 50 feet in front of a 90 degree left turn off the street onto the Church parking lot. The way it works best is to stand on the curb side of the pavement. There are no curbs here folks, cars & motorbikes rush by at mere inches away. In order to make the sharp left hand turn onto the parking lot, the motorbikes have to do what they always do. Turn "instantly" with sheer fearlessness at minimum reduced speed passed a concrete pillar since the open gate is covered from view by the pillar on the other side. If not done in a "split second" the rider will cream into the other side of the gate on wheels that are moved to slightly passed the other pillar of concrete. The crash can potentially be enhanced by the in the pavement fit narrow 3-inch steel rail that certainly can be the cause of sliding on the often "slick" bike tires. Opening the heavy metal gate, that rail assures that the person, while with all might pulling the first several feet & then turning ninety degrees & with maximum physical effort push, is aimed to help slide  the gate into it's just about the completely open position. It leaves just enough sticking out the gate to make sure a last ditched effort to miss the steel, is virtually impossible. Sepada motor riders are well trained since they receive a license with little official training, thus practicing in traffic, hoping not to get noticed by cops. Thus, bike riders are trained by getting on these race bike looking monsters at a very early age. The only training seems to be that young riders are introduced & immediately welcomed, in the process literally tossed into, the always extremely overcrowded traffic like they've always been part of the chaos. In a way that's true. From birth, babies are put into cloth slings attached to their mothers. This way the babes get used to following the riders' waving moves to miss crashing into other riders, curbs or the always present obstacles of slow-moving cars. As well as the street side "warung" ( food, fruit, hardware selling carriers on wheels), chicken, dogs, cats taking death not seriously. Then the most daring living souls, humans, crossing while holding up a hand to beg the traffic to let them linger longer on "terra firma". Add anything, often illegally, parked on or at curbside to the chaotic & noisy scene. After a while & having survived the introduction time,  babies in slings graduate to standing right behind the steering wheel handlebars ( often leaning on them) on the floor sharing foot space with the rider while staring into the backs of other bikes. Indonesian bike riding "boot camps" are the battle-tested way all kids learn to slalom like future fearless riders. The absolute irony is that most riders and passengers, up to 4 or 5 on a bike, wear helmets, but the small kids do not. Perhaps to make them even more "battle hardened" by the time they join the millions of "sepada motor" riders who are the cream of the crop of often barefoot Indonesian high skilled riders. Bottomline: Bike riders are absolutely fearless. They are, as the story likes to make clear,  trained that way on the streets from birth. Street Sense is the key, not the road rules where red light ignoring is practiced without a blink.

Jumat (Friday) night, we achieved the first extremely important moment of truth of our efforts to get, in exchange for me making very shaky entries playing badminton with ahead tennis "stick", players to join the Family History 4 Generations project. As the picture shows, Br. Ardi Atmaya in badminton gear & blue hat, materialized his side of the "deal", changing his barefoot swiftness on the courts to 'flip-flop' positioning behind the PC. He proved, surprised & elated all of us to be a super fast learner & is committed to inviting other members to follow his example.

On Saturday 21 October we received a pleasant, cannot refuse, an invitation to join the just a few hours earlier arrived from Jakarta Mission President Rowley and his wife, Sister Rowley for dinner at an adjoining great food place. For the first time since arriving in Indonesia Sister Schmid & I feasted on "foreign" cuisine". My dish was Australian steak, some French fries & veggies on a hot metal plate. Mom's, schnitzel like meat with additional veggies. Both extremely well prepared & very tender meat. Food and company were awesome. We walked from the hotel lobby to the restaurant and back right after. An activity I can highly recommend when going out for dinner. I could not resist asking two proud Indonesian Marines to have our picture taken. The slender soldier's strong handshakes proved that they do not only look but actually are in great shape. The week ended with the confirmation of a new member in our Cabang2 ( branch.) Later we attended a worthwhile Missionary Training in the Cabang1 building. Missionary "dots" were connected again. Including a very emotional plea & subsequent Testimony by Sister Rowley to keep building a stronger testimony of Kitab Mormon.

**************************
Sunday 22 Oct featured another Cabang Surabaya Dua Historic moment. The Family History room changed into a very "bubbling Full House." Three more members joined the CS2 Team as committed members who recognized the opportunity, join President Didit Dwinanto in his plea to make this Branch a lot stronger. Awesome moment. Never to be taken as anything else than Historic. The first steps are taken to a great future. As "icing on the cake", one of them, the YM President, Br. Mongan, is bringing all the Young Men next Saturday at jam 3 sore, (3 pm) to get trained in Family History.

*******************************
History will be made again on Sunday 29 October when we will make the audience understand that Family History is getting the persons behind the names Temple ready on FamilyTree & that the Proselytizing is centered in & around Kitab Mormon ( the Book of Mormon). The historic moment will be the realization that all of us will get: " Understand and accept that the two will be implemented in "tandem". Like in: "The one will support & function together, as a team, with the other."  We all hope that the future will bring the righteously desired results.

October 16 Update

Last week's activities were a "fine-tuning" of the Family History Presentation Program on 29 October.

For weeks now Mom/Oma/Sister Schmid has been prodding me that she felt strongly to make a "return" trip to the "Makam Belanda Penelem" It's the ancient civilian cemetery some 30 (if traffic is not too crowded) minutes’ drive. Finally, we had a window of opportunity to get away for some 2 hours. We were welcomed by the staff of maintaining the place where, most likely, some 2000 people have their final resting place. Among them the 10 Schmid ancestors. Mom searched the computer records in the small old office building. Last time & we were guided to a numbered but "head stone-less" double grave site. No names or any information. According to the records, Schmids were buried there. Nevertheless, we took some pictures & I dedicated the graves as the final resting place for those buried.

Mom researched the records again and after finding some new information we started our second visit. She, Personal Assistant Ari & 2 Staff members guided us to the recorded & numbered grave sites again. I was held up in a conversation with a guard in uniform with engaged in my usual "Double English/Indonesian" conversation, it was pretty hilarious. Since the guy chuckled after seeing the photo of Emelia Loffman, my great-great-grandmother, who was a full-blooded Indonesian Lady married to Charles Alexis Francois Schmid. I reiterated that 3 of my 4 paternal Generations were born in Surabaya, starting with my father & that I was born in Sukabumi, not too far from here. At one point, I realized I was about a football field length behind Mom & the 3 guys. I stopped the conversation & started to catch up. Since it was about 23 degrees Celsius by now & the paths are not really smooth my foot speed was limited. I was just about halfway catching up when some force made me lose my balance, other than tripping. In order not to hit a gravestone on my right of pointy concrete & granite material & dirt,  I quickly stuck out my arms to prevent potentially getting hurt or worse. After regaining my balance, I faced the grave and to astonishment noticed the granite plague clearly exposing information as to the person's final resting place. My emotions hit me like a brick causing tears in my eyes running in streams down my face. I loudly asked Mom to join me and she carefully trotted back. When she finally reached me, I could not utter one word since emotions peaked & just stared at the well-preserved headstone. It reads: "Gewijd aan de nagedachtenis van onzen lieven doode........Charles Alexis Francois Schmid. Geb. 25 12 1859 - Overleden 30 1 1903."
Underneath those words and in old Dutch: "Wie in de gedachten zijner geliefde blijft, is niet dood, hij is slechts afwezig" (traslation: "Who remains in the memory of his loved one is not dead, but just absent".
His wife, Emilia Loffman, who died later in Holland must have loved Charles very much. The additional Loffman names Mom picked up are buried at this same site, as the picture shows although the headstone gone. The names are of Loffman members we do not know, a Petronella Loffman . Another Petronella Loffman, Petronella Eugenie Eleon & two, most likely related to Loffman or Schmids: Jean Henri Victor Strikt Linschoten (1863) Albertina Wilhelmina Maria Strikt Linschoten.
Finally, after all these years a Schmid Family member was able to dedicate this grave site as well. After Mom & I regained our composure, the proverbial pictures were taken. From that moment forward the forces that made Mom encourage me to make a second trip to this place and me following her, had left us completely & instantly. We felt empty of sorts and were ready to leave. We just went on to the previously visited graves, cleaned them up and left. Nothing more to be done.

Yesterday, Sunday, we were part of an exciting day of a full house due to a baptism (done here on Sundays, so the whole Branch became part of the celebration) as well as a farewell service in honor of a new young missionary. The day started at the usual 9 am and ended at about 3.20 pm. The members here rise to the occasion when baptisms & missionary farewells are celebrated. They have cultivated the "linger longer" after meetings to perfection. It includes that after all is said and done "makanan" Indonesian food. The choice was feasting on "Hot" or "Not Hot" Indonesian food cooked by a couple of sisters. I took the hot food. "Enak Sekali". I learned from other sweating profusely members that you can extinguish the fire by eating some of the seedless red melon> Works> Fire was gone, sweating luckily under control. Today we are going to check out the gym on floor one. The only "flip side" of Indonesian food is the minimal fresh veggies. So, Mom cooks at home a lot & we add the incredibly fresh & inexpensive mixed & other lettuce, veggies & super quality fruit of many kinds. Including very sweet pisang (bananas) apples & more.

Take care, Elder & Sister Schmid.
Don't get too excited. Just remember folks; a 10,000 Rupiahs is a mere $0.75. Like in: " It's easy to get caught up in the zeros 000000 & imagine you're a millionaire.
